SEO myths: The 50 000 search engine submission services
Seo myths and scams are abundant on the internet. As an SEO myself I spot and identify them easily. The most prevalent of all seo myths are the submission services that offer to submit your website to 50 000 search engines for a fee averaging about $50.
Why wouldn’t something like this sound good to you? Manually submitting your website to 50 000 search engines would take you months. After all, your time is valuable and you have loads of important non SEO things to do involving your business.
Well, the truth is…
If you had to count and add up every search engine on the internet in existence today, you would have nowhere near 50 000. And who is going to add your website to these 50 000 imaginary search engines for a measly $50?
Want to know what these search engine submission services are really doing..?
Search engine submission services use automated software to submit your URL to thousands of free-for-all directories and speciality sites.
How much web traffic do you think you will get from a listing for your health advice blog on a directory of poets in Poland?
Besides that, having so many back links from unrelated and low quality sites will not benefit you. As a matter of fact, it will have the opposite effect. Google is prepared to ignore a few bad incoming links here and there from time to time, but having thousands of them is a sure way to get you penalized or even removed from the Google search engine database.
Don’t get me wrong. Directories and speciality sites are a valuable resource for incoming links but there are rules and guidelines for doing it the right way without harming your site. Just remember, its quality that counts, not quantity. Read my blog post on web directories to learn more about this.
I am also estimating there to be about 500 search engines in total but there’s only a handful of search engines that can really bring visitors to your website. For this reason, you should concentrate on the important search engines when you submit your website to search engines.
Which search engines are important and why?
Currently, there are only three major players: Google, Yahoo! and Bing. With Yahoo! not exactly being a search engine but for simplicity I will refer to them as such. The 3 combined make up an estimated 85 – 90% of the search engine market. Then there are search engines that are worth while, just not as popular but they can bring you some additional visitors, for example Ask Jeeves and Teoma. Search engines such as hotbot, lycos, AOL Search and Altavista are also worth while but there is no need to submit to them as they’re search results are powered by Google and Yahoo!.
So how popular are the other estimated 490 search engines? Well, less than 5% of the search market is spread out between them, thus leaving them to be barren desert wastelands. Therefore it goes without saying that submitting to so many search engines is a waste of time and will have no return on time invested (or $50 for that matter).
Seo myths and lies are abundant on the internet. No matter who says what, there are no quick and cheap solutions, especially from most of the search engine submission services you will find on the internet. They do more harm than good. After all, when it comes to building back links it’s quality that counts, not quantity.
